26 – by Felipe Serrano

Felipe Serrano was pissed off having to apply blur to his recent endeavor — photographing his friends nude — in order to be able to safely publish the images on social networks. Passing in front of a glass shop he saw this square piece of bubbly glass and had an idea… using the glass, the models themselves would be able to choose what and how much to conceal, and he wouldn’t have to ruin the photographs by cropping or photoshop blurring them. The idea became a concept and a conceptual series the photographer called Nu Vidro (“Nude’in the Glass“, in an approximate attempt of translation from Portuguese).

Felipe told me that he later found out the glass served not only as an ingenious means of artistic self-censoring — without resorting to editing — but also as a means of motivating people who wouldn’t otherwise face the challenge of posing nude. As some of his models told him, the piece of glass firmly held in their hands between their naked bodies and Felipe Serrano’s lenses made them more willing and comfortable. In my case, having no specific parts of my body that I specifically needed or wanted to hide, I tried playing with the idea of concealment by holding our “Vidro” in different ways in a sort of dance…

We chose to photograph in the recently renovated estudio NU so we could explore a bit some of the different things the location has to offer: the natural light of that cloudy morning, the view, and the different shapes and textures of the studio’s environment.

“By undressing, without prejudice or judgment —  the glass as interface and instrument of appropriation —, the individual finds ways to manifest his expression in the body and gestures without fear, with the freedom and the mysteries provided by the authorial manipulation of that piece of glass. That was the way I found, as a photographer, to explore in nudity elements of identity that make us up as connected humans beings. There, in the interaction with those willing to undress, to expose their boundaries to my gaze mediated by glass, I seek the exercise of exchange, trust and generosity in the recognition of what makes us the same and different at the same time. We must seek new ways of living, of coexisting with each other. Nude or not.” — Felipe Serrano
